Song Yeon Joo's works are inspired by the sea and her style is abstract. She loves diving and has been diving for more than 20 years. Through diving, she discovered the charm of the sea, the inner space of the sea is deep, mysterious and colourful. This series of works was born. Song Yeon Joo uses silver foil technique to create her works. The "Sea of Silver" series of paintings is her continuous creation for more than 10 years. From the initial style when she was studying in Japan, through her art practice in Korea and the United States, to her encounter with Jingdezhen ceramics in China. The artist's thinking embedded in the works and the styles presented are constantly maintained to change and evolve.
Since she was very young, Song Yeon Joo had always longed for the world of the sea, and finally, 20 years ago, she qualified for scuba diving and got what she wished for. There, there are endless horizons stretching out in all directions and countless mysterious beings living there. They gave her infinite touches and became the source of her creative inspiration. Especially when diving into the depths of the sea, it is as if returning to that which had been wrapped in the amniotic fluid of her mother, intimate and mysterious. Using painting to express such real and ambiguous feelings is her creation, her art.
In the process of representing the world around the sea, after various repeated attempts and groping, Song Yeon Joo obtained the material of silver foil. The silver foil changes with the direction of light or the angle of viewing, and is easily discoloured after chemical reaction. As she dives in the sea, the scenery around her changes all the time in front of her eyes, mixed with anxiety and joy, which is very similar to the process of silver foil changing from silver-white to iron-black. When creating her works, she has been subconsciously trying to express this inner feeling that accompanies the process of diving from the shallow sea to the deep sea. Rusted and discoloured silver foil can easily remind people of the passage of time, which can also enrich the meaning of the expression. Perhaps it is the unique colour and effect of the silver foil that makes it possible for her to create a unique world in the sea on canvas.
Because of the special material of silver foil, when the works are displayed, depending on the light and the space they are in, the visual effect will change, which not only increases the fun of viewing the works, but also matches her experience of the sea. It is hoped that the visual language formed on the canvas through the filtering of her own sensibility will also enable the viewer to re-experience the world of the sea as she feels it.
