More and more international artists are chasing their dreams in Jingdezhen, East China's Jiangxi Province, blending Chinese and Western cultures in this small town known as China's "porcelain capital." CGTN reporter Guo Meiping has more.
Jingdezhen is renowned for its ceramic history dating back over 2,000 years. The city is experiencing a renewal, and more international artists have come here in recent years.
GUO MEIPING Jingdezhen "The international artists are called 'Yangjingpiao,' meaning migrants from abroad. They came to start businesses and feel inspired in the city through kilns and fire. I'm on my way to visit one of them. Let's learn about his experience in China's porcelain capital."
Jaume Ribalta is a ceramic artist from Spain. He became a "Yangjingpiao" in 2022.
JAUME RIBALTA Spanish Ceramic Artist "Here I get to dip into more not just Chinese culture but ceramic technology. The way how it's been working here in China also. The great success of Jingdezhen is because (it) accepts and welcomes any idea any opinion to coming in."
Ribalta has set up his studio in Jingdezhen with help from the local network.
JAUME RIBALTA Spanish Ceramic Artist "There is a very special web here of ceramic artists, institutions, private companies that understand very well what it means for newcomers to come here and trying to settle. I think Jingdezhen is very friendly in this way. I received lots of help from everyone. I'm really grateful for that."
The Taoxichuan Ceramic Art Avenue is a new landmark of Jingdezhen renovated from an old factory. An international studio is set up here to help foreign artists with their artistic careers.
WU ZHENXI Jingdezhen International Studio "Since its establishment in 2015, the International Studio has collaborated with 3,600 international artists from 56 countries. The facilities within the art avenue are highly comprehensive, fully meeting the needs of ceramic art from material preparation to final kiln firing."
KATARZYNA MIŚCIUR Polish Ceramic Artist "Basically, my favorite thing, obviously, is this ceramic world. And there is so many manufacturers, so many artists, so much craft, it's all over the place. And I already met a lot of people, and I enjoy all the discussions about art and ceramic."
PRIYA SUNDARAVALLI Indian Ceramic Artist "There is so much to learn here. And the whole culture of the town is evolving around ceramics. So it's a very special, inspiring place to be. I came across the poetry of some Buddhist nuns that philosophy of China influences my work."
The studio has arranged various activities for foreign artists, including exhibitions, lectures, forums, and workshops.
WU ZHENXI Jingdezhen International Studio "These activities primarily enhance cultural exchanges between artists in Taoxichuan and Jingdezhen. They allow foreigners to experience Jingdezhen's culture, while Chinese artists can learn about how foreign artists create their artworks and understand their concepts."
Chinese President Xi Jinping called on Jiangxi Province to "build the Jingdezhen National Ceramic Culture Inheritance and Innovation Pilot Zone, into a new platform for cultural exchanges with other countries" during his visit to the province in May 2019. And the city is now on its way to transforming itself into a world ceramic cultural center by 2035.
